“Stop the Violence” Lunch Forum
Saturday June 6th, 1-3 pm, Chatham Friends Meeting, 158 Southern Blvd, Chatham
PeaceWorks was founded in the immediate aftermath of the US-sponsored mercenary war in Nicaragua in the 1980s. Decades later, Nicaraguans continue to grapple with the war impacts – extreme poverty, economic hardship and even political violence.
The type of violence that we witnessed in Nicaragua in the 1980’s is happening throughout Latin America and the Caribbean today.
Like the “Contras” in Nicaragua, a series of narco-traffickers, gangs and extrajudicial paramilitary groups are behind an epidemic of gun violence that has caused enormous destruction and pain in countries south of our border. Similar to Nicaragua, a great majority of the weapons are sourced from the United States.
That’s why we’re hosting a special Stop the Violence Lunch Forum on arms trafficking and gun-related violence in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Quixote Center’s Kim Lamberty will present and lead the discussion on June 6th from 1-3pm at the Friends Meeting in Chatham. Kim will also tell us about the Armas Act, national legislation to track and stop arms sales to traffickers.
We’re also asking members of the PeaceWorks community to contact Senators Andy Kim and Cory Booker to ask them to co-sponsor the 2025 Armas Act (S.3508). You can ask your Representative to sign on to the House version, HR.6736, using the congressional letter template on the Quixote Center’s website.
